KRB has evolved from one couples love for cider. Bev and Dave McKee started out making cider like most enthusiasts do, in a cheap home-style set up on their property in 2008. It makes us laugh thinking back to the first 20 or so batches that were barely drinkable (we drank them anyway of course) but one thing Bev and Dave did have was persistence, and as they say, persistence pays off! The cider just got better and better, coincidentally more people frequented the farm to say hello.
It was a Friday summer afternoon, the sun was going down whilst we sat around with some of our closest friends, it was suggested how perfect the setting was for an afternoon session and, just like that, the seed for KRB was planted. The reality of the idea however, was riddled with frustrating technicalities, mostly concerning money and shire regulations but after many, many months of blood, sweat and tears we were finally granted approval.
Unfortunately, the pain and frustration didn’t stop there, after complications with planning approvals, the build and liquor licences grants, we started to ask ourselves if we really wanted to limit ourselves to producing only cider, if we were going to do this, let’s do it properly! It was at that moment, we decided to become a brewery and obtain a liquor licence that would cater for all. Three gruelling years later, phase one of King Road Brewing Co. was complete.
Currently, we are still focusing on our cider production which is done in-house through a traditional style custom made press. At KRB we take no shortcuts, we are passionate about following practices and procedures that do not ever compromise the quality. Greater care requires more labour and time, but the results are worth it. We source all our apples from locally grown orchards to ensure an entirely local and high-quality product.
2018 will promise a big year for brewing with the arrival of our 1500 litre brew system, with the new shed plans and capacity increase already sitting with the shire we are confident that phase 2 of King Road Brewing Co is going to be a great success. Watch this space!
